Sacramento, CA, November 18, 2010 –(PR.com)– Will Allow for Increased Education, Outreach Opportunities
Like the first untethered space walks of the 1980s, Yuri’s Night, the worldwide celebration of space exploration, gained a measure of independence today with its establishment as a not-for-profit corporation in the State of California.
This is the first step in attaining 501(c)(3) status and allows for Yuri’s Night to operate independently of the international Space Generation Advisory Council.
“Yuri’s Night flourished under Space Generation,” said Dr. Ryan Kobrick, Executive Director of Yuri’s Night. “But as an independent organization, Yuri’s Night will be able to support a broader range of educational and outreach activities, including leadership development programs and scholarships.”
Named for Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, Yuri’s Night is celebrated annually on or around April 12th, the anniversary of Gagarin’s historic spaceflight in 1961. The 2011 event will mark the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight, the 30th anniversary of the first launch of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia, and the 10th anniversary of Yuri’s Night.
“Our mission has always been twofold: to celebrate our past accomplishments and look toward the future of space exploration,” Kobrick said. “This is a significant step for us. Not that we don’t love a good Yuri’s Night party, but we’ve always been much more than that.”
In addition, as a not-for-profit corporation, Yuri’s Night will be able to work directly with potential sponsors and donors.
