Dr. Alan Stern Receives 2015 Spirit of Yuri’s Night Award

Dr. Alan Stern is currently the principal investigator of the New Horizons NASA mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. The Yuri’s Night team was very impressed by the work of Alan and his team and their efforts to share their mission with the world. Alan gathered a team of top-notch scientists and engineers to collect data during the weeks and months that the spacecraft approached Pluto and the same group did a great job initiating outreach efforts to explain their mission to the public.

Exploring our Solar System with the New Horizons Spacecraft

Guest post by Alan Stern and Kelsi Singer of the New Horizons Team   NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is only a few months away from making history as the first ever spacecraft to fly-by Pluto and its five moons. Moreover, no spacecraft has ever explored anything so far away—3 billion miles, or any of the small planets of the Kuiper Belt. The closest approach will happen on July 14th, 2015 as the spacecraft dives through the Pluto system.

Yuri’s Night at the Movies!

With just under two weeks until Yuri’s Night, it’s a good time to hammer out exactly what activities you plan to have at your event if you’re hosting one. Whatever your audience is, and however many people it involves, one element you might want to consider incorporating into your Yuri’s Night celebrations is movies. After all, space has been a popular subject for films both factual and fictional ever since Georges Méliès filmed A Trip To The Moon in 1902 (the classic silent film where the poor Man-in-the-Moon gets hit in the eye with a space capsule.) There are many ways to make movies a part of your Yuri’s Night celebrations—you might plan to visit a local museum or science center to see a space documentary in IMAX, host a marathon of your favorite sci-fi flicks in your own home, or just have a film playing in the background at a traditional party for ambiance, sound optional.
