What is the Yuri’s Night Challenge?

The challenge is this: start one of the great classic sci-fi novels on or shortly after Yuri Gagarin’s birthday on March 9, and finish by Yuri’s Night on April 12. Simple right?  Pick any book you think fits the theme, but don’t pick anything about time machines, cyberpunks, robot uprisings, or future dystopias — we’re talkin’ space here people.

Here’s some recommendations:
Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clark (1973)
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein (1966)
Foundation by Isaac Asimov (1951)
Ringworld by Larry Niven (1970)
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (1985)
The Engines of God by Jack McDevitt (1995)
The Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison (1961)
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman (1974)
Dune at Frank Herbert (1965)
The Martian by Andy Weir (2014)

or if non-fiction is more your thing:
Starman: The Truth Behind the Legend of Yuri Gagarin by Jamie Doran & Piers Bizony (2011)
Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons by George Pendle (2005)
Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut’s Journeys by Michael Collins (Gemini 10, Apollo 11) (1974, reissued 2009)
An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield (STS-74, STS-100, Soyuz TMA-07M [Expedition 34/35]) (2015)
