In commemoration of 12 April 1961, when cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made the first successful space flight in history, and 12 April 1981, when the first space shuttle was launched, Space Day will be celebrated and enjoyed in Kamakura. 

Think space with a talk by a space expert and a mini live performance of space-faring ambient music by Kamakura’s favourite Montreal artist Alex Vincent.

☆ General: Includes mini-Japanese green tea, ‘Matcha’(donation of at least ¥1,000 on the day is appreciated)

A museum in a renovated private residence designed by the world-renowned architect Norman Foster’s design office (Foster + Partners). 

The museum introduces the history of Kamakura from primitive and ancient times to modern times, mainly through excavated artifacts found in Kamakura. 

Highlights include the latest video displays including dioramas, projection mapping and VR, special architectural materials throughout, a garden reminiscent of a medieval landscape, and a view of the sea from the hillside. The museum also hosts various events from time to time, including special exhibitions, lectures and workshops based on the results of the latest excavations.

The exhibition ‘Forms of Medieval Prayer’ is currently being held (10:00-16:00, closed on Sundays and public holidays).Performances:

Alex Vincent / Alex Vincent

Electric music artist from Montreal, Canada. He plays dreamy songs with a sense of floating. He has performed in Kamakura, Zushi, Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. Loved Kamakura, which he visited on his first visit to Japan, and will release the ‘KAMAKURA’ EP in 2019. They have also performed at Kisho Kurokawa’s Metabolism architecture Nakagin Capsule Tower, collaborated on songs and sessions with Japanese musicians (Shiba@FreedomSunset, Calm, etc.) and provided music for a light-up installation at a hot spring shrine in Fukushima, among other activities in Japan. A new album will be completed soon.
