Though Yuri’s Night is traditionally held on April 12, we love to celebrate other major space milestones as well–so we want you to know that this Sunday is a pretty big day in space history.
On June 16th, 1963–exactly 50 years from this upcoming Sunday–cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space as pilot of Vostok 6. Selected from over 400 applicants, Tereshkova completed 48 orbits of the Earth over 3 days on the last flight of the Vostok program. Tereshkova has remained involved in space exploration, recently expressing her desire to travel to Mars–even on a one-way trip.
We’d love to see you celebrating this historic milestone this weekend; get together with your friends, talk about space, and start thinking about what you’d like to do for Yuri’s Night in 2014. After all, it’s only 10 months away!
