Yuri’s Night is pleased to announce that private astronaut Richard Garriott is the recipient of the first Spirit of Yuri’s Night Award. The Spirit of Yuri’s Night Award is an annual (beginning in 2010) recognition of a person or persons that embody the Yuri’s Night mission of using space and art to contribute to the future of humanity, both in space and on Earth.
“We’re delighted to honor the one-of-a-kind Richard Garriott with this award,” said Yuri’s Night Executive Director Loretta Whitesides. “With his deep appreciation for the history of spaceflight, his unique outreach efforts to share the wonder of space, and his dedication to scientific discovery both on and off of Earth, Richard Garriott truly embodies the spirit of Yuri’s Night.”

Richard Garriott was presented with the Spirit of Yuri’s Night Award Saturday, April 10, after his appearance and talk at NASA Ames Research Center’s Moffett Field for Yuri’s Night Bay Area. The talk ran from 5:00 – 5:40 Pacific time, and appeared on the Yuri’s Night webcast at www.spacevidcast.com.
The Spirit of Yuri’s Night award consists of five hand-cast discs of aerogel, a superlight (96% air) material used in aerospace and science research and production, encased in an acrylic plaque laser-etched with the name of the recipient and the Yuri’s Night logo. The award was designed by Will Walker and laser-machined by MIT’s Shannon Dong and Thomas Coffee; the aerogels were produced by Aerogel Technologies, LLC.
The Spirit of Yuri’s Night Award was created in collaboration with aerogel.org and BuyAerogel.com, whose resources and sponsorship were essential in having this award come to fruition. Stephen Steiner, the creator of aerogel.org, will be interviewed on the Yuri’s Night webcast later this evening. Aerogel.org is also partnering with Yuri’s Night to send aerogel samples to educational organizations in Latin America and the Middle East for research purposes.
