YN12 Wrapup Part 3: The Final Count

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Now that Yuri’s Night 2012 has wrapped up around the world, we have mentioned some of the most extreme Yuri’s Night parties (like the party at the South Pole) and all of the fabulous news coverage of Yuri’s Night this year – and now we want to celebrate the final count of parties for 2012. We were thrilled when we finally got a party in Africa (our 7th continent for 2012) and were excited again when we bested the number of worldwide parties in 2010 (222 parties).

The count for 2012 has topped out at 236 parties in 51 countries on all 7 continents – our second best year ever! (compared to 567 parties in 75 countries in 2011)

For fun, we collected a few of our favorite Yuri’s Night tweets from this year. Here goes:

So thank you to all the long-time supporters of Yuri’s Night, especially the avid space geek writers at Huffington Post and Wired.com. Thanks to every person who hosted or attended a party. You help us make this the greatest worldwide space party in human history every year!

Thanks as well to all those people that participated in Yuri’s Night Flashback this year on Yuri’s Night Live. We got some great pictures and video there from 2012 but also some great posts from 2011 all the way back to the first Yuri’s Night party in 2001 at The Hollywood Palace. We will be announcing the winner with the executive board’s favorite flashback picture before the end of May and they will get an awesome Space Songs CD from us. If you want to see the past and present of Yuri’s Night from around the globe, be sure to check out the photos at Yuri’s Night Live – and feel free to add your own to the collection!

So thanks once again for a great Yuri’s Night 2012, make sure you get involved with our partners to continue celebrating space throughout the year, and remember – Yuri’s Night 2013 is only 11 months away!

Yuris Night Shirt in Zero-GThe Yuri’s Night team is very excited that many of the worldwide Yuri’s Night parties are happening this weekend, while others are scheduled for next week or the following weekend.  For all of you who may be attending one of the 150+ Yuri’s Night 2012 events, here are a few things that you should know:

  • Register Your Party! – If you haven’t registered yet but have a party planned, now is the time!  We’re trying to get over 220 parties this year to help us rock the planet. Register here!
  • Yuri’s Night Shop International Deadline - Today, April 6th, is the last day that we can have awesome gear from our store (like the shirts in the picture) shipped to international events (non US) for delivery by the 12th. Monday, April 9th, is the last day for domestic orders to be delivered by the 12th. If you have questions about your current order, placing an order, or shipping, contact Cariann (with your order #) at cariann@yurisnight.net.
  • Yuri’s Night Live – Don’t forget to submit photos, videos, handouts, and other files and captured moments to Yuri’s Night Live, our site that helps share the latest from Yuri’s Night parties around the world.  It’s easy to do, simply email your content to submit2@yurisnight.net.  See our Submissions page for important terms and information.
  • Check Out Yuri’s Night Kids – A little-known resource for families, schools, and party planners is Yuri’s Night Kids.  This site has a collection of everything from star maps to paper models to food you can bake to celebrate Yuri’s Night and human spaceflight.  Even if you aren’t attending a Yuri’s Night party near you, this is a great resource to share with your kids.
  • Global Webcast – Mark your calendar for April 12 and even if your local party isn’t on the 12th, you can join us and our friends at SpaceVidcast online from 8pm-12am Pacific (0300-0700 UTC) to celebrate Yuri’s Night.  We hope to get a few events to send us live video and we are also planning to run a program including video, music, and awesome Yuri’s Night and space photos.  Check it all out at spacevidcast.com/live next week.

New Space Songs, Legal Info, and Virtual Parties

Monday, March 26th, 2012

If you haven’t noticed, we’ve been slipping some new content onto yurisnight.net over the last couple weeks.

First off, if you are hunting for a soundtrack to accompany your Yuri’s Night event or simply to play while you plan for April 12, you should check out the space songs recorded by John Marmie, former Deputy Project Manager of the LCROSS mission and friend of Yuri’s Night. John’s music is awesome, inspired by his work for NASA and he’s still creating more (so watch for any future updates!).

Next, Yuri’s Night is launching a new Terms of Service agreement in a few days for our online services. I know, I know, just some legal mumbo jumbo, but it is important because it tells you what information we collect when you visit our site (visitor tracking etc.), how we protect any data you give us, and what we expect from you (no hacking or defacing the site). So please take a look and tweet or e-mail us any feedback you have.

After some discussions, we have decided to provide a new classification of parties on our site. You might have noticed this in our party ticker. We now have a category for “Virtual Worlds” for those parties that happen online, on the radio waves, and via online services. It currently includes the Spacevidcast cyber video broadcast, Third Rock Radio’s coverage, and events for those on Google+ or that donate computer processing time on BIONIC. So check those out, because anyone can participate in online Yuri’s Night events as long as they have a connection to the web.

Lastly, we wanted to let you know that if you go to a few special Yuri’s Night events in April, you may get a chance to see some very special Yuri’s Night swag that has actually flown in space! Our good friend Astronaut Ron Garan (shown with his crew above) was good enough to bring his Yuri’s Night shirt and some stickers and buttons back from the International Space Station. Here’s Ryan’s full post about the swag and where you can see it this April (with pictures!) and once again much thanks to Ron Garan for his support!
