Yuri’s Night Party Profile: Rostock, Germany
One of the most fascinating things about Yuri’s Night is how it has become a truly worldwide phenomenon, bringing together diverse nations, continents and cultures in support of spaceflight and supporting the dreams of future generations. One of the many parties that exemplifies this global spirit is Yuri’s Night Rostock, a German city on the shore of the Baltic Sea.
This is Rostock’s first year with a Yuri’s Night event, but you wouldn’t know it from the fantastic day of activities their organizing group has lined up. The event starts off at 1 PM with an afternoon of talks and lectures on topics ranging from the future of spacecraft, to geoimaging, to using missiles in atmospheric research. For the younger attendees, a children’s station with space-themed makeup and model rocket building will run all afternoon. Exhibitions and food will also be available.
After the keynote speech on the Hubble Space Telescope by Prof. Dieter B. Herrmann, president of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin and former host of the popular German TV science program “AHA”, YN Rostock will hold a film showing of Marian Kiss’ Space Sailors, a depiction of the cosmonauts in the Eastern European “Intercosmos” program (including Sigmund Jaehn, the first German in space) and their adaptation to a post-Cold War Europe. And, of course, the day concludes with an evening-long “Space Party”, with live DJs and science-fiction-inspired drinks.
Yuri’s Night Rostock will be held Saturday, April 12, at the Rostock Bunker club, located on the grounds of the historic Neptune Shipyard. For more information, visit http://www.yurisnight-rostock.de/ (text in German).
