Yuri’s Night wishes to officially express its strongest support for the upcoming Poetic Social Mission Event: Moving Stars and Earth for Water. This performance by the next private space explorer, Guy Laliberte, is scheduled to be broadcast live around the world Friday October 9th, 8:00 PM ET (12 AM GMT) during his stay on the International Space Station. Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil, will be hosting the event in support of the One Drop Foundation, which he founded two years ago with a pledge of $100 million to fulfill the dream “Water for all, all for water.” Al Gore, Cirque du Soleil, Peter Gabriel, Shakira, Salma Hayek, U2 and many others will also be taking part in this two-hour ground-breaking performance spanning six continents. 

Yuri’s Night salutes Laliberte for bringing together his space mission, his artistic talents, and the world’s leaders and visionaries to make a difference here on Earth. “Yuri’s Night has long been about using the power of music, art, and space to inspire the world with what is possible,” said Yuri’s Night founder Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides. “We are thrilled to see Laliberte using art and space to empower millions to make a difference for something as important as our planet’s water.”

In celebration of the One Drop Foundation’s efforts, Yuri’s Night will be sponsoring a special chat room on the night of Friday Oct 9th to allow members of the global space community to watch this historic webcast together. After installing Microsoft Silverlight (which should be done in advance of the performance) and opening the streaming video on onedrop.org, simply open a second window at Yuri’s Night partner Spacevidcast.com to join in on the space world’s discussions of the performance. One lucky viewer will even receive a free Yuri’s Night 2010 party pack complete with t-shirt, stickers, temporary tattoos, and other products ideal for hosting a Yuri’s Night event.

Laliberte will be blasting off September 30th as Canada’s first private space explorer on the Russian Soyuz rocket—-launching from the same pad that Yuri Gagarin launched from in 1961. Laliberte’s historic mission follows the environmental path started by Gagarin, who remarked after returning from space, “Circling the Earth in my orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty below. People of the Earth, let us come together to protect and enhance this beauty, not destroy it.”
